Description
Ying Chang Compestine was a young girl in 1966 when Mao Zedong launched the cultural revolution to regain his power in the chinese government. Mao banned foreign items, required children to dress in uniform, and unleashed the Red Guard to terrorize and imprison people who disagreed with him. It was a time of chaos, fear, and scarcity that lasted until his death ten years later when Ying was thirteen. Yet through those harrowing years, Ying's father, a surgeon trained by American missionaries, continued to educate her in secret and fuel her dreams of going to America to find freedom. Now she brings her childhood story from that dark chapter of Chinese history to life in this stirring and eye-opening memoir, magnificently illustrated by debut artist Xinmei Liu.
